The first general store opened in the village at the end of the 19th century. Over the years, new stores have come and gone. Until the last one closed in the late 1980s, there has always been at least one store in the village..
A. Palmgrens village shop

Daniel Palmgren, owned a shop in Bredvik with a branch in Norrbyn in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The shop was located on the same plot of land as the school.
B. F.M.Wikners general store

After the death of general merchant Palmgren, F.M. Wikner’s Diversehandel from Kylören opened a branch in Norrbyn.
In 1917 the house was bought up and converted into a school. The house has long since been demolished.
C. Handels AB Udden, later AB Englund andHellman

The ground floor of the house, that had been moved from Ängersjö, housed Handels AB Udden. The owner was Viktor Hellman. The company went bankrupt in 1921.
In 1921, Robert Englund and his wife Naima entered into a partnership with Viktor Hellman under the name AB Englund och Hellman. When Viktor Hellman later moved his business to Håknäs, the name was changed to
Englund & Co.
D. Konsum

The Norrbyn Coop Association was formed in 1920. For a time, it operated in the shop premises near the school (see A). In 1922, the association moved into its own property.
The association also had branches in both Valviken – which later moved to Västamarken and Öre. These were closed down and eventually, in 1967, the shop in Norrbyn was also closed..
E. Englund & Co.

When a new ferry terminal to Norrbyskär was built in 1938, the old steamboat quay was no longer used, so traffic was diverted. The shop (see B) was now malplaced at Salteriet and in 1940 new premises were built at the junction leading to the new quay.
The business was taken over by their daughter Maj and her husband Gunnar Johansson in 1958 and in 1964 the store was converted into a supermarket, with investment in new refrigerators and freezers. The business was closed in 1988, when Gunnar retired,
