KA Eriksson’s Bakery / The Eriksson Brothers’ Bakery, Norrbyn

The bakery was founded by Karl August Eriksson, born, in 1864, outside Bettna in Södermanland. Karl came to Norrbyn in the late 1880s and started a bakery together with a fellow tradesman. Before that he had worked in various places around Sweden and received his journeyman’s certificate from the Lund City Factory and Crafts Association in 1886.
The bakery in Norrbyn began on a modest scale under simple conditions in a small bakehouse. After a few years he leased a plot of land at Sillviksskatan, where there was a small cottage which was rebuilt into a house containing both the bakery and a residential apartment. This was completed in 1894.
With the establishment of the sawmill on Norrbyskär, the customer base expanded considerably and the business grew.
Sales locally were fairly small at first, but once a week they would travel over to Norrbyskär, walking along the street selling bread. They also delivered bread to Hörnefors.
After his wife’s death in 1935, the business was taken over by the sons Edvin and Bror.
The bakery was then renamed The Eriksson Brothers’ Bakery.

They baked loaves, everyday bread, and pastries. Everything was made by hand,
and the bread was baked in a wood-fired oven.
The bakery was modernized in several stages during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
Electric dough mixers, ovens, and proofing cabinets were installed. The customer base grew over the years, and by the 1960s nine people, including family members, were working at the bakery.
In May 1965 the entire business was destroyed by a fire. Attempts were made to rebuild it, but unfortunately this was not possible.
