In the bay of “Byviken”, near the marina in Norrbyn, the saltery is situated.

The building was completed in 1944
Fishing was carried out on a large scale, and fishermen from the surrounding area came to Norrbyn with their catches. The “Norrbyn–Kråken Fishing Association” was established in 1936, and the “Norrbyn Fishermen’s Association” was founded in 1943. Their purpose was to safeguard the fishermen’s interests in matters relating to finance, marketing, and the distribution of fish.
At the curing plant, many women found employment gutting and cleaning the fish, while the men were responsible for the salting.
The fish was salted, but was also processed into fermented herring and dried stockfish (for making lye-cured fish).
Storage buildings on the quay were rented for this purpose until 1944, when the curing plant was completed.
The operation was discontinued in the 1960s. In 1973, the curing plant building was purchased by the “Norrbyn Fishermen’s Association”, which maintains the property and rents out parts of the building.
The”Norrbyn Fishermen’s Association” has proud traditions and remains as a symbol of a bygone era, when the fishing industry and its men contributed to the development of the community.
